Conor McGregor’s surprise interview with ESPN’s Ariel Helwani last week covered a lot of ground, and it’s one of the peripheral topics that got the attention of Frankie Edgar.
The interview focused primarily on McGregor’s indiscretions, as the apparently contrite Irish superstar admitted to having been in the wrong in an April incident in which he threw a punch at a bar patron, and assumed responsibility for a larger pattern of erratic and lawless public behavior. However, it was also an opportunity for the former dual-division champion to express his wish to return to the Octagon.
One fighter that McGregor mentioned he would be interested in taking on was former lightweight champion Frankie Edgar. The pair never fought at 145 pounds when McGregor tore through the division before defeating Jose Aldo to win the title.
While it is unlikely the pair would meet given that McGregor prefers to fight in the heavier 155 or 170 pound divisions and the fact Edgar has said he’ll be fighting at 135 pounds next, the New Jersey native posted on Twitter that he’d accept an offer to fight McGregor at any weight class.
“You know I’m down to fight @thenotoriousmma it should have happened a long time ago. I know I’m going down to Bantam weight but for you any weight class will do. Anytime any weight class you know I’m game.”
McGregor told Helwani during the interview that he wanted to see how the lightweight title between the current champion Khabib Nurmagomedov and interim champion Dustin Poirier plays out next month before making any announcements on his return.
