Jean Silva has a lot of gratitude for his teammate.
When he first arrived in São Paulo, Brazil, Silva found a confidant in Fighting Nerds teammate Mauricio Ruffy. However, Silva has a haunting past, which makes him a wild horse — sometimes difficult to tame. “Lord” recalled an incident when he wanted to fight Ruffy inside his house just because the latter was insisting that they should train. However, Ruffy refused to fight Silva and controlled the situation by calming him down. After breaking down in front of Ruffy, Silva found a “light” in his friend’s words of God. Silva says Ruffy’s presence on that occasion was really significant for his life.

“I have enormous gratitude for Mauricio Ruffy,” Silva told ESPN. “Ruffy calmed my heart… I remember we were at his house. And he was like, ‘Ah, let’s train.’ And I started saying I wanted to leave. And he didn’t want to let me leave. And I literally argued with him because of that, and wanted to fight him inside his own house.
“He didn’t want to fight with me. He said, ‘Bro, I’m not going to fight you.’ He hugged me like this and said, ‘Sit here man.’ I remember I sat next to him and started crying, crying, crying, crying a lot. And then Ruffy, he gave that light, you know? And I remember he talked about God, in a way that fascinated me… I forgot a little about that suffering, that pain I was going through. Wow, he was really important that day.”
Ruffy: Silva ‘Became Another Person
Meanwhile, Ruffy believes the incident left Silva changed for the better.
“He became another person and a lot of incredible things started happening after that day,” Ruffy said.
Silva will headline Noche UFC against Diego Lopes on Saturday at the Frost Bank Arena in San Antonio, Texas. “Lord” will try to avenge his teammates’ losses from last weekend at UFC Paris. Both Ruffy and Caio Borralho suffered their first UFC defeats last weekend. While Ruffy was stopped by Benoit St. Denis in the co-headliner, Borralho dropped a decision in a potential middleweight title eliminator against Nassourdine Imavov.
