Jon Jones Dismisses Active UFC Champ as ‘One-Trick Pony’

UFC great Jon Jones was not impressed by Tom Aspinall’s recent performance.

In the main attraction of UFC 321 in October, heavyweight champ Aspinall vied to defend his throne for the first time as an undisputed holder. He battled Ciryl Gane, and after receiving a double eye poke in the first round, Aspinall could not continue and the result was as no contest. Aspinall retained his belt in the disappointing ending, and fans were not thrilled by how the evening transpired.

Count Jones among those who watched what went down on Oct. 25 at the Etihad Arena in Yas Island without being blown away. The former light heavyweight and heavyweight king appeared on an episode of the “No Scripts” podcast on Wednesday, where he briefly broke down what transpired atop UFC 321.

“Tom’s a great athlete,” Jones remarked, “but I do feel like he’s a one-trick pony. I believe that his wrestling and jiu-jitsu is incredibly overrated. He has a beautiful one-two…I got to learn a lot about his patterns in his last fight…that’s really about it. That’s the one thing he’s setting up real nice.”

“Bones” continued, “[Aspinall] couldn’t touch Ciryl Gane, that’s the way I felt. I felt like Gane was just getting warmed up. Gane’s hands [were] down, he was shaking his shoulders, bouncing around…touching him…he was so comfortable.”

Jones, who was linked to a championship unification match against Aspinall, decided to retire and vacate his title rather than put it up against the Brit. Since then, Jones has actively requested to be a part of the upcoming UFC White House card slated for June 2026, with his return coming at heavyweight. The promotion has indicated that it plans on rematching Aspinall and Gane as soon as possible, although Aspinall is still indicating difficulty with his vision.
