Jorge Masvidal sees Ian Garry posing a threat to Islam Makhachev.
Garry is among the top contenders for the next welterweight title shot against Makhachev. Masvidal believes Garry’s size could be a deciding factor in a potential clash against Makhachev. “Gamebred” is also impressed with Garry’s work ethic, which gives the Irishman a massive gas tank. Masvidal notes that “The Future” also has decent wrestling and the ability to return to his feet when taken down. Masvidal believes Garry can outstrike Makhachev on the feet to earn the victory.
A Style Built to Win
“I think Ian [Garry] can cause Islam [Makhachev] problems because of his height, his style. He runs a lot, he gets on that bicycle, and he just runs and runs, and then he keeps running, so he could present problems, just because of his size alone,” Masvidal told Thunderpick. “And he’s not bad at wrestling, he’s not bad at getting up to his feet. He has a good system. I don’t know if when he gets taken down, if it’ll work, but on the feet, I think he should be able to outpoint him. Stick and move, stuff some takedowns. I could see Ian beating Islam.”
Makhachev (28-1) defended his lightweight title four times before moving up to welterweight. The Dagestani star dominated Jack Della Maddalena on the ground to win the welterweight title at UFC 322 earlier this month. A week later, Garry (17-1) defeated former champion Belal Muhammad at UFC Qatar to establish himself as a contender. However, the welterweight division is teeming with contenders like Carlos Prates, Michael Morales and Kamaru Usman.
