Nurmagomedov was recently seen training his team to break the 400 meter sprint record of his friend, Islam Makhachev. Makhachev currently holds the record in the team with 57 seconds. Former UFC lightweight turned analyst, Josh Thomson, is the closest to Makhachev with 59 seconds. Meanwhile, Nurmagomedov’s personal best is 1.02 minutes. Nurmagomedov sees potential in Umar Nurmagomedov, Qurban and Amru Magomedov to beat Makhachev’s record. However, Nurmagomedov is yet to see the desired result with Umar coming in at 1.03.

“Only three guys can [break Islam’s record]. Umar, Qurban, and Amru,” Nurmagomedov said in a video post by Javier Mendez. “They can, they try, but we have to see results. Josh Thomson – 59, Islam – 57, Mamedov – 1.01, my record – 1.02.”
A Runner’s Mindset
Nurmagomedov also emphasized the importance of recovery in between laps. The UFC Hall-of-Famer claims to have maintained consistency in seven consecutive laps during his competing days.
“After you hit first lap, you only have 30 seconds to recover,” Nurmagomedov said. “After this it’s very important how you’re gonna perform in second lap… I make seven laps in a row – 1.02, 1.06, 1.11, 1.13, 1.16… I think runners understand.”
Makhachev (28-1) was one of the favorite students of Nurmagomedov’s late father, Abdulmanap. After growing up together in the mountains of Dagestan, Khabib, Makhachev, and other members of their team were gradually brought to America by Abdulmanap to train under the tutelage of Mendez at the American Kickboxing Academy in San Jose, California.
Nurmagomedov (29-0) went on to become the lightweight champion and defended his title thrice before retiring in 2020, following the demise of his father. As correctly predicted by Abdulmanap, Makhachev followed in Khabib’s footsteps and became the lightweight champion in 2022. Makhachev defended the title four times before moving up to welterweight, where he dethroned Jack Della Maddalena this past November to win the title. Meanwhile, Khabib has dedicated his time to help Makhachev and the rest of the team with their careers.
