O’Malley is scheduled to fight rising bantamweight contender Yadong Song at UFC 324 on Jan. 24 in Las Vegas. O’Malley (18-3) hopes to earn a title shot against Petr Yan with a potential win over Song (22-8).
O’Malley casually teased that he might even retire if he defeats Yan. One of O’Malley’s friends reminded him that while some people leave the UFC at their peak, others continue fighting like Tony Ferguson. While Ferguson was once riding a 12-fight winning streak, he parted ways with the UFC on an eight-fight losing streak, the longest in the promotion’s history.
Exit Strategy?
However, O’Malley won’t wait long enough to end his career like Ferguson. “Suga” claims he will retire if he keeps losing consistently.
“I’m gonna go out there and take care of Song, take care of Petr. I’m gonna retire. This might be the last Suga year ever. Go 2-0,” O’Malley said on YouTube. “… It’s so pointless to predict what I’m gonna do in the next two to five years. I go out there and lose, and then lose, I’m done with this s—t. Ideally, I got out there and take care of Song and get that Petr fight. And see how life goes after.”
O’Malley won the bantamweight title against Aljamain Sterling and defended it against Marlon Vera before losing it to Merab Dvalishvili in 2024. O’Malley failed to reclaim his title in their rematch last year, where Dvalishvili finished him after winning a decision in their first encounter.
Sean O’Malley says he might retire if he loses again and again 🤯‼️
