Video: Gable Steveson Trains with Jon Jones Ahead of Third MMA Bout

Gable Steveson is putting in the work ahead of his third scheduled mixed martial arts appearance.

The former two-time NCAA national champion wrestler and Olympic gold medalist is training extensively with ex-UFC two-division champion Jon Jones to hone his skill set as he works his way toward his goal of an Octagon debut.

In a series of videos posted on social media, Steveson works both striking and wrestling with Jones. Steveson is scheduled to face 14-fight veteran Hugo Lezama at Mexico Fight League 3 on Feb. 19. The 25-year-old wrestling ace has finished his first two MMA opponents inside of a round.

Embracing a New Role

“Great weekend with Gable,” Jones wrote on Instagram. “He’s leveling up extraordinarily fast. Teaching is a martial art of its own, and I’m still learning it. Won’t be long now until we’re standing there with the new heavyweight champion of the world.”

While Jones seems to be embracing his role as a coach, “Bones” is still holding out hope for a fight on the UFC White House card that is expected to be held this June. Thus far, UFC CEO Dana White hasn’t seemed interested in allowing Jones to participate after a long-awaited heavyweight title unfication bout against Tom Aspinall fell through last year.
